Meet Janet Fitzgerald- the cosmic first lady of transcendental cardio exercise.
I will admit that at times I have caught myself being a bit of a “spiritual snob”. Like any good Los Angeles occupant, I come armed and ready with an entourage of life coaches, shamans, psychics, healers, gurus, sages, priestesses, and spirit guides. So, it is a treat and blessing when I meet someone who reminds me not to take myself so seriously.
I found my latest “fitness guru” (and girl-crush) at a spin class in West Hollywood. Janet Fitzgerald teaches spin classes throughout the week at “Body and Soul” a fitness studio located just west of La Cienega on Santa Monica Blvd.
I was first lured into Janet’s class because, like people do… my friend dropped celebrity names. When I heard that Jodie Foster, Nicole Kidman, Famke Janssen, Lisa Rinna and even Tipper Gore attend Janet’s class… I knew I had to get in there. I mean come on Tipper Gore?!!! I love that broad!
So I get into class and set up my bike. Towels in place, water in the right spot, cute LA locals surrounding me, Jodie Foster only a couple bikes away (I’m just certain we will hit it off…I mean come on, we like the same things…like spin classes) I am ready for class to begin. Then it happens, Ms. Janet makes her entrance and we begin our journey.
Her unique formula of exercise pushes you to the limit of what you think you can possibly achieve… and then it pushes you more. But here is where the class gets special. I realized that during the entire time I was on the bike, Janet was teaching really amazing Zen philosophy. Guiding you through the process of shutting your brain off and experiencing the present moment, Janet takes you out of your body to work on your soul while kicking your ass. She reminds you where you are, who you are, and what you are actually doing. It’s amazing.
Now everyone has been in a situation where a fragile yoga teacher named “Sunshine” or “Willow” tries to feed you all this soft mushy yoga talk… and all you want to do is kick the poor girl in her shin. Janet is much different. She is kind of like the Laura Croft of the new age movement… she definitely is filled with a lot of wisdom, but could kick your ass in a second if she so chooses…but what she provides is an experience rather than a class. Janet will give you more than physical health, she will guide towards spiritual growth.
Every week I learn something new about myself, and with Janet’s help, I am drowning in my jeans… anyone that can lift your spirits and eliminate your waist line is someone you have to check out.
*If you want to meet Janet for yourself call Body and Soul at 310-659-2211 and find out more information about her classes. If you want to take her class, I recommend making a reservation… she’s a popular girl.
