there's a new joint in town and it's called the palihouse.
palihouse is an upscale, extended stay hotel/condo building with a lounge/bar, coffeehouse and patio restaurant. the condo's aren't being sold (why would they even try, with the real estate mkt. in the shitter?) instead they are renting them (furnished) on a month to month basis. the lounge boasts a full, yet hidden bar with ample staff on hand to serve you from a comfy chair, or sofa. there is no waiting at the bar for a bartender to take your order here.

having just wrapped up casting and production on two pilots, i now have my days free again for lounging in coffee bars with my friend, co-conspirator and neighbor Smooth Money. Smooth is also enjoying some down time as he launches his next media venture. so we took advantage last week and visited the palihouse for some coffee and tea. with us on this visit was Smooth's friend Terry Farmer. Terry is a musician and radio host from ann arbor, michigan. Terry and Smooth were taking a break from a week-long project they were putting together in Smooth's studio.

we found the palihouse lobby/lounge to be very accommodating and friendly. the decor is a little "trying to hard" for my tastes, but it does have a very nyc feel to it. music played throughout the lounge at a nice, low ambient level. extremely nice and efficient waitresses escorted us to the lounge and offered us any seating area we liked (it was pretty empty at 4pm in the afternoon). from there the waitress took our order. i had a double espresso. Smooth had green tea and Terry had english breakfast tea. both tea drinkers gave their orders an enthusiastic thumbs up. the price was very reasonable and the presentation was impeccable. i felt that my double espresso was really a 1/2 order single espresso...but cost $6. granted though it was some of the best coffee that i've ever been able to finish in one sip.
because of the high price for my little espresso, we are knocking this potentially 5 star coffee bar down to 4 -- 4.5 stars. next time i'll just get a regular coffee--type drink.
their dessert selection looked great. fancy cupcakes, tarts, scones and the like.
i think i'd like to stop in for an evening cocktail soon too.
stop by palihouse soon and enjoy it while it's slow and the employees are still nice. i predict that'll change.
while we enjoyed our afternoon "tea", i noticed 3 people using the lobby's free wi-fi on their laptops. so bring your computer and surf the porn sites while you're there!!!!
