HIH TO THE RESCUE!

Kitten Rescue is Los Angeles's largest rescue group and one of the most respected rescues in the country.

Rescuing and placing over 5,500 cats into loving homes since 1997, Kitten Rescue does not discriminate against kitties that have special needs. Unfortunately, often times these cats get overlooked by adopters, especially with kitten season coming up.

A great example of this is Azra, a gorgeous, young Russian Blue with the most amazing personality. Azra is FIV+. All this really means is he needs to be an indoor cat, fed a quality high protein diet, and taken to the vet for regular checkups. Still, he gets overlooked. THE FIRST DOG GOES GREEN

Oh to be a First Dog. Folks get feverish over you before you're even selected. 

Sustainable Pet Design has crafted the perfect eco-design dog house for the coming pooch called Summa Canum (Top Dog). It will offer a green roof, recycled wood from naturally felled trees and zero-VOC paint and varnish. To top it off, Neil Young has volunteered to deliver the mini mansion in one of Hot and Green's favorite cars- his all electric 1959 Lincoln. 

The designers want people to look a little deeper into their pet project:

"Sustainable Pet Design’s vision does not end with the arrival of the Summa Canum at The White House. Our intent is to create a n ongoing testing ground for sustainable practices to which all Americans can contribute. Summa Canum can be retrofitted with solar panels, radiant floor heating, a graywater recycling system–just about anything you can imagine. When Summa Canum is tricked out to the max (or when the First Dog puts her paw down for some peace and quiet), we’ll build another, together."

Kitten Rescue is hosting it's 10th year anniversary THIS SUNDAY, Sept. 14th from 6-10pm. Hosted by Jenna Fischer (The Office) and honoring Battlestar Galactica star (and proud Kitten Rescue member) Tricia Helfer, the Fur Ball promises to be a fun-filled evening spent with fellow animal lovers who want to help us make a difference.

You'll be treated to a delicious dinner, an OPEN BAR, a wonderful array of silent auction goodies, and a screening of a special video highlighting Kitten Rescue's first decade of challenges and accomplishments. And every attendee will get a special gift bag filled with fabulous swag (We Hollywood peeps love our swag)!

We've saved over 9,000 cats and kittens since we've started (I've fostered 6 myself recently), and that's just the beginning! We really hope you will join us as we usher in a new decade of helping homeless and abandoned cats (and other animals - we're branching out!) in the Los Angeles area.

CASTING ASPERSIONS: THIS BLOG SMELLS LIKE POOP Hot & Personal by G. Charles Wright

i'm now a dog owner. i've adopted a really terrific schnauzer/poodle mix. he weighs in at 16 lbs. and doesn't shed.

he's also pretty rad. very sweet and friendly.  i've named him DR. BOMBAY.  he's been a hit everywhere we go.

i found dr. bombay through the good folks at BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SOCIETY. they rescued him from the baldwin park animal shelter, where he was about to be euthanized, AND was covered with matted fur and about a dozen fox burrs dug deep into his skin. BEST FRIENDS had these burrs surgically removed.  they nursed this dog back to health.  now he's gone from living on the streets of baldwin park to living in a west hollywood apartment.  i should've named him arnold drummond.

one of the many great things about living in weho is how dog friendly this enclave is.  dr. bombay and i go on power walks that last an hour, or more and i never have to think about bringing along water for him. because we pass at least 4 or 5 places where water is either out for dogs, or where i can ask for water and someone nice will bring it out.

and there are handy dog poop bag dispensers all over this city. and lots of trash cans.

but for some reason a lot of people don't pick up after their pets.   if you see someone in this town that doesn't pick up their dogs poop, please do what i do.  run over and pick up  their dog's poop yourself and then  throw it on the person who neglected it.  it's a totally fun game. and worth getting poop on your hands... again.

CASTING ASPERSIONS: RESCUE ME Hot & Personal by G. Charles Wright

oh dear. what a week!
the main focus of my week was finding a dog. as i "reported" in a previous "column", i have begun the search to find the "perfect" pet for me. also in that previous "column" i included a photo of a boxer/staffy mix that i was keen to meet. Today was our "coffee date."

turns out that the breeds i really like are amongst the biggest shedders. and i may have an allergy to that. i most definitely have an aversion to dog hair being everywhere.

decisions, decisions.

ONE of the reasons i feel i NEED a dog, is because i'm too anal retentive about keeping my apartment clean. i get so weird about it that i sometimes don't let friends come over because i don't want my apt. getting dirty.

but i don't want to be that guy.

i want to be the guy that has friends over. i want to be the guy who is more carefree about things and less uptight. i think a dog will make me become that person, because it seems that a dog sort of beats any pretense right out of you. at the same time i can still fulfill my stringent and regimented nature by constantly teaching my dog obedience!

i look forward to joining my west hollywood brothers and sisters as a proud pet owner.

So, back to my "coffee date" with Elroy.

today i visited with linda blair (yes, THE linda blair) out at her dog rescue in acton, ca. this was the sight for my meeting with Elroy.

i really don't know how she does it. linda almost single-handedly runs an enormous dog rescue and cares for some 20 dogs at a time. she has a few volunteers, and occasionally pays others to help, but pretty much it's just her. this woman has a tremendous love for dogs.

i spent about 2 hours with her today and toured the entire facility. i won't lie to you, these dogs have it made. most of her "guests" appear to be of the pitbull mix and purbred bull terrier varitey. "some people think i run a pitbull rescue. but i don't! i run a dog rescue. it's just that the pitbulls never leave, because nobody will adopt them. and i cannot turn my back on these beautiful dogs." she explained. i put quotes around that, but it's still really me paraphrasing what she said. but that's pretty close.

it's happened. i've finally gone totally weho. all i can think about is how much i want a dog.

it should be mentioned that in my 40 + years of living i have never had a dog before. my mom has had dogs. many of her boyfriends had dogs. and they were ALWAYS around when i was growing up. so i'm used to dogs. but i've never been responsible for one before.

but now suddenly i MUST have a dog. i blame it on my environment. EVERYONE in west hollywood has a dog. this city is a giant dog park with margaritas.

and finding a dog is a lot like internet dating...i guess. i went online to find a dog that would be a good fit for me. the one i seem drawn to is a hurricane katrina survivor. i figured that since i'm a tsunami survivor, that perhaps we'll have that trauma in common, if nothing else.

i'll keep you posted. i'm going to attempt a face to face with him this weekend. kind of like a coffee date.

oh, and to change the subject.
for loyal readers of my "column", i ran into peter paige today. in the hallway outside my office. first thing in the a.m. quite by accident. he came up to me and said hello. this leads me to believe he recognized me as his hot in hollywood internet stalker. it's possible though that he didn't recognize me at all. he may have been meaning to say, "Hello. can you tell me where the men's room is?" but i kind of cut him off at "hello."

i was my usual ass self.

It's Raining Cats and Dogs Hot Pets by Larry Sullivan

The East Valley Animal Shelter is in need of any towels/blankets you may have. Old, new, whatever...
It's been cold out here in The Valley and the rains were hard. There is possibly more rain to come this weekend. The animals have a great facility there but a very small area in their outdoor kennels to stay dry and 'warm'. If you have extra and can drop them off, the address is below.

Also, it is down to the last three weeks for getting signatures for the Humane Farming Initiative to be placed on the November ballot to prevent cruelty to calves raised for veal, pigs during pregnancy and egg-laying hens. We in the LA area have to collect 650,000 signature by February 22 so we could really use your signature if you are registered to vote in CA. If you want to sign the petition I'll even drive the petition to you if you're in LA county... just put a comment below and I'll contact you. That is how much the signature means! And I have a PRIUS so I'm not polluting too much! :-)

Anytime I tell someone I’m a dog trainer, they immediately go for their phone to show me pictures of their furry friend. Or, the digital camera comes out where pooch pictures take up half the memory.
