Yeah, yeah, it was True Blood season finale night, but here in L.A. it was mainly about MTV's Video Music Awards. Here are the CliffsNotes:
A "surprise" appearance from Rihanna, just in time in join Eminem on stage for their hit single "Love the Way You Lie."
One of the few standing ovations went to Usher's mash-up of "DJ Got Us Falling in Love Again" and "OMG."
Katy Perry presented with Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga won the well-deserved Video of the Year (and dropped the name of her new album as promised: Born This Way), and Justin Bieber performed outside the Nokia in front of hundreds of screaming banshees girls.
Host Chelsea Handler, the first female to preside over the awards in 14 years (really MTV?), evoked the Spirit of Gaga, got knocked up in a hot tub with the Jersey Shore boys, and did her best not to trip on her lines while "high."
And, yes, Kanye debuted his new single, an ode to douchebags, and redeemed himself.
Best performance of the night? That went to Florence + the Machine's "Dog Days Are Over." Expect their single to zip up the iTunes chart this week:
